Choosing a Mobility Aid

Canes with Foam Handle

Single point cane

A cane is the most basic and least bulky mobility aid. This is the best choice for users with moderate balance and stability issues. This walking aid will lighten the load from the legs to the upper body. There are a few different options to choose from. The most common choice is a straight cane with a rounded crook handle. Another option is a cane with an offset handle and swan neck curve, which provides users with additional stability. The largest and sturdiest option is a quad cane. It has a broad, durable base, which is great for those who require maximum weight-bearing and support.

Walkers

Some users need a bit more stability than a cane can give. If that sounds like you, you may want to think about investing in a walker instead. This walking aid is geared toward those with significant balance issues who are at risk of falling. The standard models consist of an aluminum frame and four legs. All of these legs stay on the ground as you move. However, you will need to be able to lift it and move it forward as you walk. This is an excellent pick if you need partial body weight support.

Rollators

Rollator

If a walker sounds like a good choice except for the part about needing to lift it, you might be better off with a rollator. This walking aid is often referred to as a rolling walker due to how similar the two are. The difference is that all four legs on a rollator have wheels. This means you can easily slide it forward as you move without having to lift it at all. If you experience weakness when standing or need extra support when walking, this is the mobility aid for you. With that said, you should never try to use a rollator to support all of your body weight as it can lead to injuries and falls.
