The Honest Comparison — Furniture vs Medical Equipment
This is the most common question we hear at our La Palma showroom: "Should I get a La-Z-Boy or a Golden Technologies lift chair?" The honest answer depends on what you actually need.
La-Z-Boy is America's most recognized recliner brand — known for comfortable furniture since 1928. Golden Technologies is a medical equipment manufacturer that has specialized exclusively in power lift recliners since 1985. These are fundamentally different products built for different purposes.

What Is Golden Technologies MaxiComfort?
MaxiComfort is Golden Technologies' proprietary positioning system — and it's the biggest reason to choose Golden over La-Z-Boy. Unlike standard lift chairs that only recline to a few fixed positions, MaxiComfort allows completely infinite positioning anywhere between fully upright and fully reclined.
This includes the zero gravity position where your legs are elevated above your heart — a position NASA developed to reduce physical stress on the body. This position can improve circulation, reduce back pressure, and provide genuine therapeutic benefit. No La-Z-Boy lift chair offers this.
On the Twilight series (PR515 and PR527), Golden adds a separate back and leg motor that allows the chair to move into a nearly horizontal sleeping position — something furniture recliners cannot achieve.

Where La-Z-Boy Falls Short for Medical Needs
La-Z-Boy has built its reputation on comfort — and their furniture is genuinely comfortable. But when a lift chair is needed for medical reasons rather than simple comfort preference, several limitations become significant:
- Fixed positions only — La-Z-Boy lift chairs typically offer 2-3 reclining positions. People with back pain, circulation issues, or post-surgical needs often require precise positioning that fixed positions cannot provide.
- No waterproof fabric — for seniors with incontinence concerns, Golden Technologies' Brisa waterproof fabric is a practical necessity. La-Z-Boy does not offer this.
- Not designed as DME — La-Z-Boy chairs are designed as furniture, not medical equipment. The lift mechanism is an add-on feature rather than the primary engineering focus.
- No Medicare documentation pathway — even if a La-Z-Boy chair would qualify for Medicare coverage, you cannot get that documentation from a La-Z-Boy retail store.
- Usually special order — most La-Z-Boy lift chairs are not stocked in store and require 4-8 weeks for delivery. If a chair is needed urgently after a hospital discharge this is a serious limitation.
When La-Z-Boy Might Be the Right Choice
In fairness, La-Z-Boy is not a bad product. There are situations where it may be the appropriate choice:
- You primarily want a comfortable living room recliner with a helpful lift assist — not therapeutic positioning
- You are not concerned about Medicare documentation
- You are comfortable with special order wait times
- Brand loyalty or aesthetics matter more than medical features
- You have a La-Z-Boy store nearby with the specific model you want in stock
The Medicare Question — Important for Both Brands
Many people search for La-Z-Boy lift chairs hoping to use Medicare benefits. Here is the straightforward answer: Medicare covers the lift mechanism of ANY qualifying power lift chair regardless of brand — including La-Z-Boy. However the chair must be purchased from a Medicare-accredited DME supplier.
La-Z-Boy retail stores are furniture stores — they are not Medicare-accredited DME suppliers and cannot process Medicare claims or provide required documentation.
Wellness Medical Equipment and Supplies in La Palma is not currently a Medicare-accredited biller either — we are a cash pay store. However we provide detailed itemized receipts that you can submit to Medicare for potential reimbursement. Many of our customers find the process straightforward and the same-day availability worth the out-of-pocket payment.
