of senior falls happen in the bathroom — making it the most dangerous room in the home for older adults. Most bathroom falls are preventable with the right equipment.
The bathroom is where most senior falls happen. Wet surfaces, limited grab points, and the physical demands of getting in and out of a tub or off a toilet make the bathroom a high-risk environment — especially for seniors with arthritis, balance issues, or recent surgery.
The good news is that bathroom falls are largely preventable. The right equipment, properly installed and properly used, can dramatically reduce fall risk and restore confidence and independence.
The Essential Bathroom Safety Items
🔒 Grab Bars
Wall-mounted bars near the toilet and in the shower or tub. The single most effective fall prevention item for the bathroom. Must be properly anchored into wall studs.
🪑 Shower Chair
Allows sitting while showering for those who cannot stand safely for extended periods. Available with and without backs and arms.
↔️ Transfer Bench
Straddles the tub edge so the user can sit outside and slide in — eliminating the dangerous step-over entirely. Best option for tub users with significant mobility limitations.
🚽 Raised Toilet Seat
Adds 3-5 inches of height to the toilet, dramatically reducing the effort needed to sit down and stand up. Essential after hip or knee surgery.
🏠 Commode
Portable toilet that can be placed next to the bed or anywhere in the home. Ideal for those who cannot safely walk to the bathroom at night.
🛁 Bath Step
Reduces the step height for getting into a tub. Non-slip surface and sturdy construction. Good option before committing to a transfer bench.
Grab Bars — The Most Important Item
Grab bars are the single most effective bathroom safety investment. A properly installed grab bar near the toilet gives seniors something to grip when standing up — the most common moment of bathroom falls. Bars in the shower or tub give support during the transition in and out and while standing on a wet surface.
The key word is "properly installed." A grab bar must be anchored into wall studs or with toggle bolts rated for the appropriate weight. A bar that pulls out of the wall when grabbed is more dangerous than no bar at all. We carry grab bars in multiple lengths and finishes at our La Palma showroom.
Shower Chair vs Transfer Bench — Which Do You Need?
This is one of the most common questions we get. Here's the simple rule:
- If the person can safely step over the tub wall or step into a walk-in shower — a shower chair is the right choice.
- If stepping over the tub wall is unsafe or painful — a transfer bench is the right choice. It eliminates the step-over entirely by extending outside the tub.
After hip replacement surgery, most patients are advised not to swing their leg over a tub wall during recovery. A transfer bench is the standard recommendation in this situation.
Raised Toilet Seats — Essential After Surgery
Getting up from a low toilet seat requires significant hip and knee flexion — exactly the motion that is most painful and risky after hip or knee replacement surgery. A raised toilet seat adds 3-5 inches of height, dramatically reducing the effort and risk involved.
Models with arms provide additional support and are easier to use than armless versions. We carry several models in stock and can help you choose the right height based on the patient's situation.
