Choosing the right mobility scooter can transform daily life β making it possible to get around independently at home, run errands, and stay active in the community. But with so many options available, it can be hard to know where to start.
This guide breaks down the three main types of scooters and helps you figure out which one fits your lifestyle best.
The Three Main Types of Mobility Scooters
| Type | Best For | Turning Radius | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3-Wheel | Indoor use, tight spaces | Tight | Medium |
| 4-Wheel | Outdoor use, uneven terrain | Wider | Heavier |
| Travel / Folding | Transport in car, travel | Compact | Lightest |
3-Wheel Scooters
Three-wheel scooters have a single front wheel that allows a much tighter turning radius than 4-wheel models. This makes them ideal for indoor use β navigating hallways, turning in small rooms, and maneuvering through grocery stores. They're generally lighter than 4-wheel models and easier to maneuver for shorter people.
The tradeoff is stability. With only three contact points on the ground, 3-wheel scooters can tip more easily on uneven outdoor terrain like grass, gravel, or slopes. If you plan to use your scooter primarily outdoors, a 4-wheel model is safer.
4-Wheel Scooters
Four-wheel scooters provide superior stability on all surfaces. The wider wheelbase makes them safer on uneven terrain, slopes, curb cuts, and outdoor pathways. They're the right choice for people who spend most of their time outdoors or who navigate varied terrain regularly.
The tradeoff is a wider turning radius β 4-wheel scooters require more space to turn and can be harder to maneuver in tight indoor spaces like narrow aisles or small rooms.
Travel Scooters
Travel scooters are designed to disassemble into lightweight pieces that fit in a car trunk without a ramp or lift. The Pride GoGo β one of our most popular models β breaks down into several pieces with the heaviest component typically under 30 lbs.
Travel scooters are ideal for people who frequently transport their scooter to appointments, shopping, or trips. They sacrifice some range and terrain capability compared to full-size models, but for daily errands and travel they're often the most practical choice.

- Do you need to transport it in a car? If yes, consider a travel scooter or verify the disassembly weight of standard models.
- What is your weight? Standard models accommodate up to 300 lbs. Bariatric models are available for users up to 500 lbs.
- How far do you need to travel on one charge? Range varies from 8 miles on travel models to 20+ miles on full-size models.
- Will you need to navigate ramps or slopes? Look for models with higher ground clearance and slope capability.
