One of the most common questions we hear at our La Palma showroom is "should I rent or buy?" There's no single right answer β it depends on the person's medical situation, how long they'll need the equipment, and their budget. This guide walks through the key factors for each major type of equipment.
Rent When...
- Recovery is short-term (weeks to 3 months)
- You're not sure if the condition is permanent
- You want to try before committing
- You need equipment urgently for a discharge
- Budget is tight short-term
- You don't have storage space long-term
Buy When...
- You'll need it for 3+ months or permanently
- You use it daily
- Purchase price is close to 3 months rental
- You want a specific model or custom features
- You want full ownership and no monthly cost
- You've already tried it and know it works
By Equipment Type
Lift Chairs
Lift chairs are one of the most common rent-first items. Many families rent after a hip or knee surgery to help a parent stand up during recovery, then decide to keep it permanently once they see how much difference it makes. We offer lift chair rentals and can credit your rental toward a purchase. If you know the person will use it long-term, buying is almost always more economical after 2-3 months.
Hospital Beds
Hospital beds are most commonly rented because the need is often tied to a specific recovery or hospice period. A hospital bed rental is the right choice for post-surgery recovery, short-term rehabilitation, or end-of-life care. Families who purchase hospital beds typically do so for permanent in-home care situations.
Mobility Scooters
Scooters are more commonly purchased than rented because mobility limitations that require a scooter tend to be ongoing rather than temporary. However, renting first is a great way to determine which type (3-wheel, 4-wheel, travel) works best before committing to a purchase. See our scooter lineup here.
Wheelchairs
Short-term wheelchair rentals are common after injury or surgery. Long-term wheelchair needs are typically better served by purchase, as rental costs add up quickly and a purchased chair can be customized to the user's specific needs.
Walkers and Rollators
Walkers and rollators are inexpensive enough that renting rarely makes financial sense unless the need is very short-term. Most people who need a walker or rollator benefit from purchasing one sized and adjusted specifically for them.
The Break-Even Calculation
A simple way to decide: divide the purchase price by the monthly rental cost. If the result is less than 3-4 months, buying is usually more economical. If you're unsure how long you'll need the equipment, rent first and buy when the situation becomes clearer.
| Equipment | Typical Rental | Buy When... |
|---|---|---|
| Lift Chair | Monthly rate | You need it 2+ months |
| Hospital Bed | Monthly rate | Permanent care situation |
| Wheelchair | Weekly/monthly | Ongoing mobility need |
| Scooter | Weekly/monthly | Regular daily use |
